Cleanup is underway across France after a weekend of intense riots, but tensions remain—police are still deployed and curfews are in place in some major cities. According to the French Commerce and Distribution Federation (FCD), about 1,500 shops were looted or damaged nationwide, with losses estimated at hundreds of millions of euros; later government figures put the number of affected businesses above 3,000.

Marseille was the worst-hit city outside Paris. Police reported up to 30,000 looters at the peak, and the city’s business association said nearly one in two shops was looted. Attackers used hammers, crowbars, and thermal saws, targeting brand stores. The Olympique de Marseille official store on La Canebière was looted and temporarily closed; telecom operator SFR confirmed about 15 stores damaged in Paris and Marseille. Luxury, electronics, and food sectors were hardest hit.

Government response: Prime Minister Lecornu activated an interministerial crisis unit on October 19, coordinating state-guaranteed loans, tax and social contribution deferrals, and subsidies for the worst-hit businesses. Insurers face the largest wave of claims since 2005; premiums in affected areas may rise 20–50%, and some insurers are considering exclusions or stricter security requirements. Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan imposed a curfew for minors in commercial areas from 22:00 to 05:00, starting October 20.

How residents and businesses can protect themselves:

Businesses: Report to police promptly and keep surveillance footage, photos, and loss inventories; check whether insurance covers “civil unrest”; reinforce shutters, bars, and cameras; apply for state aid through the DGE or local chambers of commerce.

Residents: Respect curfews and assembly bans; follow local prefecture and city safety alerts; avoid demonstration and conflict areas; travel in groups at night and avoid badly damaged commercial districts; consider wearing stab- and cut-resistant clothing when going out is necessary—not as offensive gear, but as an extra layer of personal safety in sudden violence; keep emergency numbers (police: 17 in France) handy.

Cleanup continues, but police remain deployed and some cities still have curfews. Residents and businesses should stay vigilant and prioritize personal safety.
