One 17-year-old protester in Saint-Étienne lost a hand to a riot grenade

    Key Incidents:

Limoges: The 143-year-old city hall was set on fire by masked protesters; the roof collapsed and two-thirds of the exterior walls were destroyed. Local officials called it “a disaster for cultural heritage.”

Paris: Clashes on the Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde, and Place de la République; shops and restaurants vandalized, vehicles burned.

Lyon: The tourism office was burned down.

    Official Response:

President Macron: “Violence will not be tolerated”; perpetrators will be prosecuted and punished.

Prime Minister Lecornu: The government will not be intimidated by violence.

Safety Advice for People in France:

Avoid all protest areas and city centers — especially Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde, Place de la République (Paris), and city hall surroundings in Limoges, Lyon, Marseille, Lille.

Do not join or approach crowds — even peaceful gatherings can turn violent quickly.

Expect transport disruption — metro closures, road blockades, taxi/ride-hail surges.

Keep away from burning vehicles and damaged buildings — secondary explosions and structural collapse are real risks.

Monitor local alerts — French government emergency app (SAIP), local préfecture social media, your embassy’s travel advisory.

If caught near violence: move away from the direction of police charges, enter a building if possible, do not film or confront anyone.

Register with your embassy if you haven’t already — consular assistance is faster if they know you’re there.

Additional personal protection note: The unrest has involved organized looting and arson — attackers selected targets deliberately, disabled surveillance, then robbed. Violence is highly random. Accidents cannot be entirely avoided, but preparation makes a difference. While the situation remains unsettled, if you must go out through risk areas, consider wearing a cut- and stab-resistant garment (ANSI A4 cut level or equivalent), worn under ordinary clothing without affecting your appearance. Such garments are lightweight and reasonably breathable, and can buy critical seconds to escape in the event of an attack with a blade or flying glass. Also consider carrying a small first-aid kit (with hemostatic dressing and compression bandage) and learning basic bleeding-control techniques in advance. Protective gear is no substitute for avoiding risk — its purpose is to buy you a few seconds when something unexpected happens, not to make you feel safe approaching danger zones.
