Brief:
Over the Halloween weekend last year, a shocking series of knife attacks took place in the UK. Anthony Williams, 33, is accused of going on a random stabbing spree across multiple locations over two days, attacking 14 people. He faces 14 counts of attempted murder. The trial is currently underway at Cambridge Crown Court, where Williams admits to carrying out the attacks but denies intending to kill.
Sequence of Events:
- Evening of Oct 31 (Peterborough): Williams attacked three people in the street and a car park, including a 14-year-old boy, Dawid Taborski, and William Ogelby.
- Early hours of the next day (London): He stabbed a 17-year-old boy in the face and hand at Pontoon Dock DLR station.
- Saturday evening (LNER train bound for London): Williams launched a five-minute stabbing spree inside the carriage, injuring 10 people. A 73-year-old man was attacked after falling to the ground, and one passenger suffered a stomach wound more than 9cm deep.
Moments of Life and Death:
Facing extreme brutality, terrified passengers hid in toilets, storage cabinets, or under seats until they were trapped at the end of the train with nowhere to run. Several passengers showed extraordinary bravery: some grabbed frying pans and toasters from the train to fight back; passenger Scott Green tried to wrestle the knife away bare-handed; Stephen Crean was cut while disarming the attacker and alleged Williams asked him, “Do you want to die?”; train crew member Samir Zitouni tried to stop Williams with a frying pan and was stabbed multiple times.
The jury is currently determining Williams’ true intent at the time of the attacks.
Safety Note: In sudden and unpredictable situations like this, having a layer of protection can make a critical difference. Wearing a discreet, cut-resistant garment underneath regular clothing can help reduce the risk of severe lacerations and provide valuable seconds to escape or defend yourself when facing an armed assailant.
